Professor Waris Alvi

During my stay in Ahmedabad I met Professor Alvi, a renowned Urdu poet/ critic, regarding a research paper of my friend. We made several visits to his house and got the opportunity to interact with such a beautiful human being. He shared his vast knowledge and opened my doors to a whole new world of Urdu poetry. I have some very sweet memories of his house... his singing... storytelling... poems

Koi umeed bar nahi aati, Koi surat nazar nahi aati, pehle aati thi hale dil par hasi ab kisi baat par nahi aati,
Maut ka ik din muyyan hai, phir neend raat bhar kyon nahi aati.
hai kuch aisi hi baat ke chup hun warna kya baat kar nahi aati.
........ I am so touched...Recently been to Galib ki Haveli in Chandni Chowk.

I was very fortunate to have met Him for the last time only just a month ago. Even in His ill health His smile and charisma brightened not only the room but also the hearts of those that were in the room.
